Independent Mechanic in Somerset

As we are in Somerset we thought you might find the following information interesting.

Situated in the South West of England Somerset borders Dorset and Devon. Somerset's county town is Taunton but there are a number of other notable towns such as the historic market town of Wincanton, only 4 miles away from our workshop in Henstridge, which is of course the home of the famous Wincanton Racecourse. Castle Cary, Bruton, Illchester, Illminster, Chard, Frome, Crewkerne, Evercreech and Somerton to name but a few are quintessential Somerset market towns whilst Minehead, Bridgewater, Taunton, Yeovil, Wells, Shepton Mallet and Glastonbury to the north of the county offer a larger town for shoppers in Somerset and holiday makers alike.

Places in Somerset

The coastline around Minehead and Watchet, bordering Devon and Exmoor National park provides a focal point for holiday makers. However, there are a huge number of beautiful, small villages inland in Somerset which deliver that picture postcard view. Such villages are Charlton Horethorn, Compton Dundon, Baltonsborough, Keinton Mandeville, Curry Rivel, Martock, Stoke-Sub-Hambdon, Horsington, Templecombe and Queen Camel.

Somerset Attractions

There are many attractions in Somerset catering for all pockets and interests. South Somerset offers the Fleet Air Arm Museum at Yeovilton, whilst north Somerset offer Cheddar Gorge and Wookey Hole caves. In addition there is a huge amount of history in Somerset from the timeless Somerset levels hit so badly by flooding in winter 2013/2014 and Wells Cathedral to the ruined abbey at Muchelney. Glastonbury is perhaps one of Somerset's most famous towns known as a centre for spiritualism and lay lines on which Glastonbury Tor is built and the supposed home of King Arthur. We must not forget also Pilton the home of Glastonbury Festival, originally call Pilton Pop Festival. Templecombe was the subject of a 'Time Team' search when they visited the village in search of a monastery as the possible home of the Knights Templar, from which Templecombe gets its name.

Transport links in Somerset

Although Dorset has a remote and rural feel to it there are major transport links in the county. The A303 runs through the centre of the county offering a good link to London in about 2 hours. With trains running to London regularly from Templecombe Somerset has made a good place to live for those who work in London.
